Personal Development assists Business Development
Many of my clients come looking for business of professional development and end up benefiting from personal development. In reality, business development, professional development and personal development are all on the same continuum. To assist a business to grow, the individual often needs to develop in a professional sense which is enabled by them growing in a personal sense. Home life impacts business whether one wants it to or not.
Being a mentor allows me the opportunity to lead off from any starting point. Ultimately the learnings taken away in the work context will have value in one's personal life. If a role within a company is not working for an individual, something has to change. 'If you can't change the people, change the people' is a maxim which has been around for ages, yet the 'how to' change a person hasn't been well docum ented. From my perspective its about their willingness to change. This is often guarded by their perceptions. Assist them to change their perceptions, and the world changes with it.
Personal development doesn't necessarily have to be facilitated by a 'counselor' or an Employee Assistance Programme. The stigma that is associated to some of these programmes may in fact be a debilitating factor. Starting with a review of performance, a business unit evaluation or a career development discussion may be the appropriate starting point.
